Gran Melia has become a highlight of my recent trip to Rome. This excellent hotel is now one of my favourites in the eternal city.

I had only a brief preview of this wonderful property as my timetable in Rome was tight and  allowed only for a one night’s stay. I didn’t have a chance to experience Clarins spa or the dining at the hotel but I will give you a bit more information on those after my next visit.

Winning Points

First winning point of the hotel is its location. Riverside position in Trastevere is absolutely brilliant – you are 10 minutes walk away from the Vatican city and 15 minutes from the centre. You can do all the sightseeing by foot from Gran Melia.

Another wonderful feature of the hotel is the expansive and picturesque grounds. Gran Melia is surrounded by lush gardens landscaped around a picture perfect swimming pool. The pool is decorated by elegant cabanas and presents a perfect setting for Roman summer afternoons. Relax poolside with a cool drink and a refreshing swim in the crystal clear blue water after a busy morning of sightseeing.

Location, setting and swimming pool make Gran Melia a stand out in the city centre and one of the most perfect hotel for families in the summer months.

Accommodation

Gran Melia is a perfect size hotel with 120 rooms and suites. It is small enough to be personal yet big enough to have atmosphere. Accommodation varies from standard rooms (30 sq meters) to the Presidential Suite with an impressive outdoor terrace with Jacuzzi and breathtaking view of the city.

Of course there is everything in between the two – junior suites with a separate living room, loft family rooms and Deluxe one bedroom suites for those who appreciate a bit of space on their holiday.

Dining

Gran Melia serves wonderful Italian breakfast with plentiful seasonal fruit, peaches and cherries in the summer, pastries, Italian cheeses and cold cuts, cereals, yogurts and hot dishes. The setting is lovely, looking onto the pool, but unfortunately there are no outside tables.

Fine dining restaurant Vivavoce is open for dinner only and I am looking forward to trying it next time.

The Lux Traveller Loves

I love the elegant style of the hotel – the villa looks grand and traditional, yet it is modern and very glamorous inside.

Resort style pool in the city centre – a rare gem in Rome.

Warm service and excellent location in the centre within walking distance to most attractions. The Hotel is close to the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica and the stunning Piazza Navona. The Colosseum, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are also in the vicinity of the hotel.

Brand new rooms – the hotel is only 4 years old and it looks and feels brand new.

Splitting Hairs

Breakfast area would benefit from some outdoor tables, especially in the summer months. Apart from that my only complain is not having enough time on this trip to enjoy everything Gran Melia has to offer.

All In All

Gran Melia is an excellent new addition to Rome’s luxury hotel scene. It is definitely worth a visit especially if you are planning to travel in the summer months.

Best for Romance, Honeymoon or Family vacation.
